The renovation carried out in 2016-2020 was based on the building`s period character and cultural-historical values. The hall has been allowed to retain its warm and convivial atmosphere while the building`s original star-shaped layout from 1888 has been recreated. The same applies to original details such as colours, friezes, paintings and carpentry.
The developed layout and the new entrances have, among other things, created new and more natural walkways in the hall. This provides better commercial conditions for traders. Another advantage is that the restaurants have been moved to facade locations. The entire urban space around the market hall will eventually become more alive, when businesses are visible from the street and are open in the evening.
A lot of focus has also been on things that are not so visible from the outside. Östermalm`s Saluhall is now a more environmentally friendly and sustainable trading location. It is about energy efficiency, better physical working environment for the staff, improved systems for goods transport and waste, accessibility and more.

The city of Stockholm has renovated and developed Östermalm`s Saluhall, one of the world`s leading trading places for raw materials and food experiences. The four-year renovation was completed with a reopening on March 5, 2020. The brick building from 1888 has amazing qualities both interior and exterior, and with that it also has the city`s highest classification for cultural and historic buildings.
The renovation was based on the building`s period-typical character and cultural-historical values. The hall has retained its warm and convivial atmosphere while the building`s original star-shaped layout from 1888 has been recreated.

- Stoltheten har varit oförändrad genom tiderna, säger Christer Elmqvist, som vi träffar i kommande numret av Östermalms Saluhall Magasin 📖Vissa byter jobb flera gånger i karriären. Andra förblir trogna sitt yrke livet ut – och stannar i Östermalmshallen. Christer Elmqvist har skrivit fiskhandlare på visitkortet sedan 1950-talet. Det var då han fick arbete som springpojke i farmor Lisas fiskaffär i saluhallen, en plats han har kommit att älska och vet mer om än de allra flesta.
Hela intervjun kan ni läsa i nästa nr av Östermalms Saluhall Magasin som kommer ut lagom till Hallens 135-årsdag den 30 november. I magasinet delar Christer med sig av tillbakablickar från livet som handlare genom åren och roliga minnen (numera är han en glad pensionär och familjeföretaget drivs vidare av fjärde generationen Elmqvist).
Torsdag den 30 november har handlarna dessutom kvällsöppet i butikerna till kl.21 för att fira födelsedagen och det bjuds på jubileumspriser, smakprover och glatt mingel dagen till ära. Något att se fram emot i höstrusket 🍁🍂🎈🏰
