Founder’s Top 5 Picks: Dan Christian shares his overall favorite markets!

Hey Fellow Market Lovers,

Although I love so many of the beautiful markets featured in our Top 100 list, I thought I’d share a handful of my absolute favorites to inspire your travels for 2024.

1. Borough Market, London – A taste of home

Being born in the UK and having a deep affection for London, it may seem obvious. Yet, my adoration for this market extends beyond delightful English fare to the rich tapestry of cultures, individuals, and cuisines that make it a must-visit every time I journey to England. When I’m in town on a Saturday, you’ll locate me here, followed by a leisurely stroll along the Thames.

Don’t Miss: The Cheese Toastie from Kappacasein Dairy!

2. Victoria Market, Melbourne, Australia – 2nd Home

I loved living in Australia. Living in this ‘lucky country’ offers countless delights, with outdoor markets standing out. They showcase fresh produce, diverse people, and intriguing cultures and dishes. Reminiscing about my upbringing in Toronto, Canada, I find parallels to our time in Melbourne. It’s truly a special place that should be on your Australian itinerary. Discover more marvelous markets nationwide, like Sydney Fish Market and Central Market Adelaide.

3. Tsukiji Fish Market, Tokyo – A Global Trip Highlight

During our “Around the World” family adventure in 2019, we kicked off our journey in Tokyo due to our admiration for Japanese culture and, of course, sushi! The anticipation of immersing ourselves in the vibrant heart of Japan’s markets  had been building for years. Witnessing the intricate artistry of the fishmongers felt like watching a captivating performance. Our taste buds were treated to the freshest and most exquisite sashimi we had ever encountered! Please note: The Tuna Auction has been relocated to the nearby Toyosu Market.

4. St. Lawrence Market, Toronto – My Local Treasure

St. Lawrence Market is a place close to my heart. More than just a market, it’s a cornerstone of my weekend rituals, brimming with cherished family moments. To me, this market embodies Canada perfectly—vibrant, expansive, and teeming with treasures. I urge you to drop by for lunch on your next visit to Toronto.

Don’t Miss:  The Peameal Bacon Sandwich (aka Canadian Bacon) from Carousel Bakery!

5. Granville Island Market: Vancouver’s Vibrant Culinary Haven

Initially, I was hesitant to add another Canadian market to my inaugural Top 5 list. However, upon comparing the time spent at other remarkable markets like Pike Place in Seattle, La Boqueria in Barcelona, and Ben Thanh Market in Vietnam, I found myself consistently drawn back to the countless visits with friends and family at Granville Island Market. Residing in Vancouver’s West End allowed for us to take a delightful ferry ride to this amazing place. While the whole area is charming, the market truly steals the spotlight, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring Vancouver.

Don’t Miss:  Indulge in Longliner Seafoods’ delightful Candied Salmon! Treat yourself to a small bag of this exquisitely flavorful salmon coated in maple syrup.
